Shipmates Light is a small structure with a ship's light installed in memory of sailors lost at sea. Located on the edge of Elliott Bay near the Central Waterfront, the marker was sponsored by Seattle area maritime unions, the Port of Seattle, the US Coast Guard, and a number of maritime companies and individuals. The inscription reads: "In honor and in memory of the seamen who have given their lives in service to mankind, this memorial beacon is erected and dedicated this 22nd day of May 1977 AD. Let the rays of this light serve as a symbolic link between us ashore and our fellows who have gone down to the sea for the last time."
