Top-notch military museum. Great for kids.

A new facility with 20,000 square feet of exhibits, the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport in Kitsap County preserves, collects, and interprets the history of the US Navy under the ocean for the benefit of the Navy and the people of the United States. Significant artifacts on display include major US torpedoes dating from the Whitehead and Howell torpedoes to modern Mk 46 and Mk 50 weapons; a Confederate mine from the Civil War; torpedo tubes from the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Tecumseh, and a simulation of the control room from the fast attack submarine USS Greenling.

The museum also features a unique exhibit on the oceans where submariners live and work. Using hands-on activities, visitors learn about the physical properties of the ocean such as buoyancy, pressure, density, heat transfer, light, sound, salinity, and oxygen. A microscope with slides of sea creatures, such as starfish and diatoms, lets children and adults see some of the fascinating creatures of the sea. The exhibit includes a video of the mysterious volcanic black smokers and tube worms from the underwater Juan de Fuca Ridge 300 miles from the coast of Washington State.
